Hi everyone,
I’ve been reading up on decentralized sequencers lately and wanted to get a pulse on what others here think. With so many L2s and rollups gaining traction, it feels like the centralization of sequencing is becoming more of a concern. Most rollups today rely on a single sequencer, which obviously introduces trust assumptions and censorship risks—even if they’re fast and efficient.
A few teams (Espresso, Astria, Fairblock, and others) are working on decentralized or shared sequencer designs, but from what I can tell, most are still early or not yet battle-tested. There’s a lot of discussion around how to handle ordering fairness, MEV resistance, and latency. It’s not clear whether any of the current designs fully solve those problems without sacrificing performance or UX.
That said, I keep wondering—how much of a priority is decentralized sequencing right now? Is it something that needs to be solved soon, or can the ecosystem tolerate a bit more centralization at this layer while the tech matures?
Curious if anyone here is building in this space or following it closely. Are there any implementations you’re excited about, or do you think this is mostly hype at this point? Would love to hear what others are seeing.
